AFRICA HISTORY 🌍 MALI 🇲🇱
The Great Mansa Musa, was the ninth Mansa of the Mali Empire, one of the most powerful West African states. He has sometimes been called one of the wealthiest people in history, though his wealth is impossible to accurately quantify and it is difficult to meaningfully compare the wealth of historical.
Musa earned his fortune primarily through trading gold and salt, which were found in abundance in West Africa at the time. He used much of his wealth to strengthen important cultural centers, especially Timbuktu.
Musa was a very successful military leader. During Musa's 25-year-rule the Mali Empire more than tripled in size and had significant influence in several modern day countries including Mauritania, Senegal, Nigeria, Burkino Faso and Chad. Musa conquered more than 20 major cities in his lifetime.
It has been said that of all of Mansa Musa's wives (there were four), one was. nót only the most beautiful but also his favorite. She had many interests but, most of all, she loved to swim each even- ing with her ladies-in-waiting at a-special place in tie Niger which flowed through her husband's kingdom
After his return from Mecca, Mansa Musa began to revitalize cities in his kingdom. He built mosques and large public buildings in cities like Gao and, most famously, Timbuktu. Timbuktu became a major Islamic university center during the 14th century due to Mansa Musa's developments
How did Mansa Musa lose his wealth? After returning home, Musa tried to boost Egypt's economy by repurchasing some of the gold he had given away at such a steep interest rate. His sons, who were too weak to maintain the empire, succeeded him after he died in 1337 at the age of 57.
